An electrical raceway is an enclosed galvanised steel channel with a removable cover. It is used to route and fully enclose power, data, and communication cables. It can be installed within a floor screed or fixed to a ceiling or wall surface. Aparna Rollform supplies GI raceways in widths of 50–300 mm and heights of 25 mm, 38 mm / 40 mm, with one, two, or three compartments. They are available in 1.6–2.0 mm and in galvanised sheet (GI), hot-dip galvanised, powder-coated, and aluminium finishes.
An electrical raceway is also called a cable raceway. Unlike an open cable tray, it fully encloses the cables, making it suitable for applications where they need to be protected and concealed.
In this guide, we will learn what an electric raceway is, its types, sizes, and specifications, raceway covers, materials and finishes, accessories, installation, comparison, applications, and others.
An electrical raceway is a completely enclosed metal channel, most commonly galvanised steel, designed to carry and protect power, data and communication cables along a defined route. They are either cast into a floor or fixed to a ceiling or wall. The enclosure is what separates it from other cable-support products. So it is a preferred choice wherever cables need to be hidden, protected, and kept accessible at defined points only.
The main feature of a cable raceway is full enclosure. A cable tray is an open or ventilated support in which cables sit and remain exposed. On the other hand, a raceway is an enclosed channel with a cover that protects the cables inside it from dust, moisture, physical contact, and tampering. A cable tray acts like a shelf, and a raceway acts like a box.
Cable raceways are commonly used for concealed floor distribution to workstation clusters in offices. They are also used for surface and ceiling routing where an open cable tray may not look suitable or where the cables may be exposed to accidental contact. They are useful wherever cables need to be fully enclosed instead of simply supported, especially when power and data cables need to follow the same route in commercial and institutional buildings.
Aparna Rollform supplies GI cable raceway in two mounting types: underfloor and ceiling/surface mounted. Each is built to a different access and installation logic, described below.
Ceiling mounted raceways are protective channels screwed directly onto walls or ceilings instead of being buried in floors. They are used in places like hallways to keep wires safely covered and hidden from sight. Installers hold them up with screws or brackets, spacing them based on the weight of the channel rather than the wires. They have removable covers that allow access for maintenance.
Underfloor raceways are cast into the floor screed during new construction or a major renovation, then finished over with tile, marble or another floor covering. Because the channel disappears beneath the finished floor, access to the cabling inside it is provided only at defined points — junction boxes and floor boxes — rather than along the run. This makes the screed depth, the finished-floor-level coordination, and the box positions the decisions that determine whether an underfloor installation actually works.
| Feature | Cable Raceway | Cable Tray |
|---|---|---|
| Shape | Fully enclosed box | Open or ventilated support |
| Cover | Removable cover | Generally open |
| Protection | Helps protect cables from dust, moisture and accidental contact | Provides cable support with greater exposure |
| Best For | Enclosed cable routing and concealed floor or surface installations | Open cable support and routing |

A raceway can have one, two or three compartments, depending on the requirement. These compartments are separated by dividers, which help keep different types of cables separate within the same enclosed raceway.
Raceway size should be selected based on the number and size of cables to be installed in each compartment. Allow sufficient space for cable installation and future additions, and select a suitable standard raceway size. For installations with separate power and data cables, each compartment should be sized according to the cables it will carry.
Raceways are available in standard lengths of 2500 mm and 3000 mm. Dimensional tolerances may vary depending on the manufacturing process and applicable product specifications.
All raceways use removable covers to let you lay and inspect wires. The style depends on the location:

Removable covers are fitted either screw-fixed or clip-on, with cover width matched to the channel width and a small overlap at the edge to keep the enclosure fully closed along the run. GI raceway with cover is supplied to match every standard width in the size table above.
Aparna Rollform raceways are roll-formed in galvanised steel, hot-dip galvanised steel, powder coated steel and aluminium.
Pre-galvanised (GI)
Pre-galvanised GI raceway is manufactured to IS 277:2018, coated to a specified GSM before roll-forming, and is the standard finish for indoor and covered installations.
Hot-dip galvanised
Aparna Rollform hot-dip galvanises its raceways after fabrication. This coats and seals every cut edge with zinc.
This is crucial for under-floor runs because they are inaccessible:
Aluminium
Aluminium raceway is supplied to IS 737 to ensure high-quality material grading, structural uniformity, and excellent mechanical strength.
Powder coating
Powder coated raceway is available in colour options that can be coded by service — for example, distinguishing power from data runs visually — with interior finish specified to match.
| Installation Condition | Recommended Finish |
|---|---|
| Indoor, Dry | Pre-galvanised (GI) |
| Indoor, Humid | Powder coated or Hot-dip galvanised |
| Screeded Floor | Hot-dip galvanised |
| Exposed Outdoor | Hot-dip galvanised or Aluminium |
| Coastal | Hot-dip galvanised or Aluminium |

Raceways can be equipped with various accessories such as junction boxes, floor boxes, couplers, and fixing clamps.
Junction boxes provide access and cable-pulling points along an underfloor raceway run, positioned wherever the run changes direction or needs a service take-off. Floor boxes provide the service outlet at finished floor level, typically at a workstation position.
Junction Box Specifications
| Feature | Specification |
|---|---|
| Sizes (Width) | 150 mm, 225 mm, 300 mm, and 400 mm |
| Base Thickness (T) | 1.6 mm to 2.0 mm |
| Height (H) | 50 mm, 70 mm, or custom site sizes |
| Types | Square or rectangular profiles |
| Finish | Pre-Galvanized (GI), Powder Coated, Aluminium, or Stainless Steel |
Junction boxes may be wider than the raceway itself where a larger box is required for cable access, changes in direction or service take-offs.
Because an underfloor raceway is concealed beneath the finished floor, access along its length is not available after the screed is completed. Box spacing, therefore has to be decided at the design stage, before the screed is poured. Spacing should be planned according to the compartment layout and cable requirements and agreed with the raceway supplier during layout.
Couplers join raceway lengths in a continuous run, maintaining the enclosure at the joint. Fixing clamps secure the surface and ceiling raceway to the mounting substrate at the fixing centres set out in the raceway installation.
Underfloor raceways are installed within the floor screed to provide an enclosed route for cables. The raceway is positioned according to the required layout, with junction boxes and floor boxes provided at designated access and service points.
Ceiling and surface raceways are fixed to walls or ceilings to provide an enclosed and protected route for cables. They can be positioned along the required cable path while keeping the wiring covered and accessible.
Cables are routed through the enclosed raceway along the designated cable path. Where the raceway has multiple compartments, the compartments can be used to keep different cable services separated.
Floor raceways installed beneath screed may be exposed to loads from normal foot traffic and, in some locations, chairs or trolleys. The raceway and cover should therefore be selected for the intended installation conditions. Any specific load rating should be confirmed with the raceway supplier before specification.
Where a coated raceway system requires electrical continuity across joints, the installation should use suitable bonding arrangements in accordance with the applicable electrical requirements. The coating at a joint may prevent direct metal-to-metal contact, so the continuity method should be confirmed for the specified system.
Aparna Rollform raceways are roll-formed from coil in-house, so a raceway, its cover, and its boxes share consistent material, coating, and profile across the same order.
Aparna Rollform’s manufacturing is certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018.

A cable raceway is an enclosed cable pathway with a cover, while a cable tray is generally an open or ventilated support system. A raceway provides a more enclosed route for cables, whereas a cable tray leaves the cables more exposed.
A fully enclosed cable tray can be considered a type of raceway. However, in Indian trade usage, a raceway usually refers to an enclosed, compartmented floor or surface channel, while a standard cable tray is generally open.
One compartment suits a single service on a branch run; two compartments are for combined power and data; three compartments add a channel for a third service such as fibre.
The required screed depth depends on the raceway height and the finished floor build-up; it should be agreed with the raceway supplier before the screed is poured. Contact us for project-specific guidance.
Yes, ceiling- and surface-mounted raceway is fixed directly to a slab or wall, or by suspended brackets in a ceiling void, using a removable cover for maintenance access.
A conduit suits a small number of circuits pulled through a round tube. A raceway suits distribution across several circuits or services, with compartment segregation and box access. Aparna Rollform does not supply conduit.
